Obra

Tras llamar la atención del que fuera su editor para el resto de su carrera, Kazuhiko Torishima, con obras como Awawa World y Mysterious Rain Jack (la cual era una parodia de Star Wars), logró debutar a corta edad como dibujante en 1978, con la historia Wonder Island que fue publicada en la revista semanal Shonen Jump. A partir de ese momento creó una serie de historias cortas como Tomato (esbozo de lo que luego sería Dr. Slump) y Today's Highlight Island. Todas tuvieron una moderada aceptación entre los fans, y gracias a ello el autor tuvo la posibilidad de realizar su primera serie.

En ese mismo año de 1996, la compañía que realizaba el anime, Toei Animation, intentó continuar con la historia, pero Toriyama se negó a producir más manga de Dragon Ball, así que Toei Animation decidió realizar por sí misma una serie original como una secuela de Dragon Ball Z, aunque por petición de Toei Animation, Akira Toriyama ayudó en el inicio del proyecto con el diseño de los personajes y máquinas principales, tres artes conceptuales, y el diseño y título de la serie. También es el anime en el que menos ha contribuido. Así empezó Dragon Ball GT, que no tuvo tanto éxito como las versiones anteriores (Dragon Ball y Dragon Ball Z).
